No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
